Why is mario and luigi plumbers?

Mario was originally a carpenter with a pet gorilla which escaped and climbed an unfinished skyscraper with his girl friend. In the Mario Bros game he was changed to a plumber in the sewers of New York since his clothing works as a plumber too. His brother was introduced with a quick pallette swap and resulted in him being a plumber too
