Does anyone know where I am able to Purchase William Hallo's Studies in Sumerian Belles-lettres cheaply?
Liam, my mind is reeling at the cost of that volume. I checked at Abe Books UK and it is even more expensive there! I have found no reasonably priced copies on the internet, and because it represents such an outlay of resources when new and was probably printed in small quantities (because it is specialized and scholarly) and is still very new, it is unlikely (I regret to inform you) that you will achieve your objective. Sigh! Where does that leave you? First and foremost, you should check on university libraries near you (if any) and see if you can borrow it through inter-library loan. You should also alert used book sellers near you that you would like to be called if it comes through their shop, in fact that you would consider it a kindness if you were given right of first refusal. Then you should make every effort to get another volume or two at a more reasonable cost containing much of the same material. I have been similarly frustrated many times, and can commiserate fully, but it is simply too much to ask of a student to make such a financial outlay. I spent $400 once for a publication, but it was the entire 24,000 pages of the OED; for some things, we willingly make exceptions... always ask yourself whether the information contained in those covers runs up to the value of the book as a salable product. It seldom does. I go so far as to ask myself if what I gain in knowledge can be leveraged, through teaching, into at least as much money in return. If I cannot answer in the affirmative, I put it out of my mind and get on with things... I know it's hard to let go, God knows, but sometimes we have to. Good luck. Someday, I want to read the book you author; I know it will occur.
